Woodswoman 101 - Pyramid Mountain Education Center, NJ

Saturday,April 29, 2017

If you’ve ever wondered how the folks up front figure out which path to follow, what all those squiggling lines on the map mean, or how to figure out the shortest way back to your car, this workshop is for you.

Come join 3 longtime hikers, AFW members, and event coordinators, Jackie, Dagi and Priscilla, as they take you through the nitty gritty of becoming comfortable in the woods. Topics to be covered:

• Hiking basics of sanitation, what to pack, what to wear, what to eat and water, water, water.
• How to read and understand a trail map; including contour lines, symbols and waterways.
• How to use your compass and trail map together to figure out how to get where you want to go.
• Some common concerns such as ticks and snakes and bears, oh my!
• And most importantly, what to do and think about before you begin your hike.

The first part of the day will be classroom training and discussion. The second part will be a hike where you can put your new skills to use. Hopefully, you will gain a new level of wisdom and confidence in the woods.
